MCB: How has the band’s musical style evolved since you first started nearly four decades ago?īarnes: Well, everybody’s trying to get on the radio, and there’s only 24 hours in a day with a lot of commercials. When we played our first club, we didn’t have name for the band and thought back to that funny story. 38 special that was going to do the talking for him. MCB: Can you tell me about the significance of the band's name "38 Special"?īarnes: We used to rent a warehouse somewhere to rehearse, ‘cause if we were in someone’s garage we would get the cops called for noise. At first, Donnie Van Zant considered embarking on a career on the railroad, but older brother Ronnie knew music was in his blood and convinced him to put personal passion ahead of chasing the almighty dollar. If the name of Van Zant sounds familiar, Donnie is the younger brother to the late Ronnie Van Zant, founder of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Appreciating the humorous irony behind the situation, the group agreed 38 Special seems fitting as a name for their band from that moment forward. Due to the noise level, police were called in and when it was discovered the young men couldn’t come out due to an issue with a padlock, the officer used his police standard 38 Special to shoot off the padlock. 38 Special, Donnie Van Zant formed his own band alongside Don Barnes, Steve Brookins, and Ken Lyons, The name of the band was the result of an incident where the group found themselves locked inside a warehouse while practicing their music. The city of Jacksonville, Florida, serves as the original home base for the Southern-style rock group known as 38 Special.
